Thélème’s upcoming album brings John Dowland, John Cage and Sting together

With All we get is life, to be released on 22.11.2024 by Aparté, Thélème brings together two composers almost 400 years apart: John Dowland (1563-1626), with his Second Booke of Songs or Ayres, and John Cage (1912-1992), whose Song Books marked the end of the twentieth century. As a special guest on the album, 17-time Grammy Award winning artist Sting offers a new version of his hit song "Shape of My Heart" arranged by Jean-Christophe Groffe and Nikki Buzzi.
In this programme, the compositions of the two musicians enter into a dialogue. Taken from John Dowland's Second Booke of Songs or Ayres, Thélème records here the complete works for two voices and lute, which are interwoven with large excerpts from John Cage's Song Books. Enhanced by a viol consort and a modular synthesiser, Thélème also presents personal explorations of various works by the American composer and poet, developing an unexpected soundscape.
Around this album, Thélème has also developed a complete universe combining music, photography, film and performance with its own singular language. Inspired by the indications given by John Cage in his Song Books, the album cover is the result of a collaboration between Jean-Christophe Groffe, photographer Benjamin Hénon and stylist Valentine Mazel.
As the albums’ special guest and an enthusiast of John Dowland, from whom he drew inspiration for his 2006 album Songs from the Labyrinth, Sting delivers with Thélème an intimate and cosmic version of his timeless ballad “Shape of My Heart.” He's also featured in Dowland's Flow my tears video (created by Le Jardin des solutions).
Avec All we get is life, à paraître le 22.11.2024 chez Aparté, Thélème réunit deux compositeurs distants de près de 400 ans : John Dowland (1563-1626), avec son Second Booke of Songs or Ayres, et John Cage (1912-1992) dont les Song Books ont marqué la fin du XXème siècle. Invité exceptionnel sur l'album, Sting propose une nouvelle version de son tube Shape of My Heart, arrangée par Jean-Christophe Groffe et Nikki Buzzi.
Dans ce programme, les compositions des deux musiciens entrent en dialogue. Extraites du Second Booke of Songs or Ayres de John Dowland, Thélème enregistre ici l'intégralité des œuvres pour deux voix et luth, qui se mêlent de larges extraits des Song Books de John Cage. Enrichi par un consort de violes et un synthétiseur modulaire, Thélème présente également des explorations personnelles de diverses œuvres du compositeur et poète américain, développant un paysage sonore inattendu.
Autour de cet album, Thélème a également développé un univers complet mêlant musique, photographies, films et performances avec un langage propre et singulier. Inspirée des indications données par John Cage dans ses Song Books, la couverture de l'album est fruit d'une collaboration entre Jean-Christophe Groffe, le photographe Benjamin Hénon et la styliste Valentine Mazel.
Invité de marque et grand passionné de John Dowland à qui il a consacré un album sorti en 2006, Songs from the Labyrinth, Sting livre avec Thélème une version cosmique et intimiste de son tube planétaire Shape of my heart, et a prêté son visage au clip du titre Flow my teares (réalisé avec Le Jardin des solutions).

Jahrhunderts markierten. Als Special Guest des Albums bietet der 17-fache Grammy-Gewinner Sting eine neue Version seines Hits „Shape of My Heart“ an, arrangiert von Jean-Christophe Groffe und Nikki Buzzi.
In diesem Programm treten die Kompositionen der beiden Musiker in einen Dialog. Aus John Dowlands Second Booke of Songs or Ayres nimmt Thélème hier das gesamte Werk für zwei Stimmen und Laute auf, das mit Auszügen aus John Cages Song Books verwoben ist. Mit einem Gambenconsort und einem modularen Synthesizer präsentiert Thélème auch persönliche Erkundungen verschiedener Werke des amerikanischen Komponisten und Dichters und entwickelt so eine unerwartete Klanglandschaft.
Um dieses Album herum hat Thélème auch ein komplettes Universum entwickelt, das Musik, Fotografie, Film und Performance mit seiner eigenen einzigartigen Sprache verbindet. Inspiriert von den Angaben in John Cages Song Books ist das Albumcover das Ergebnis einer Zusammenarbeit zwischen Jean-Christophe Groffe, dem Fotografen Benjamin Hénon und der Stylistin Valentine Mazel.
Als besonderer Gast des Albums und Liebhaber von John Dowland, von dem er sich für sein Album Songs from the Labyrinth aus dem Jahr 2006 inspirieren lassen hat, liefert Sting mit Thélème eine intime und kosmische Version seiner zeitlosen Ballade „Shape of My Heart“.
